Published: 29 January 2020

Téréli, a village in the Dogon region of Mali, was first linked with Burley in Wharfedale in January 2000, and the 20th anniversary of the friendship was marked with celebration in the Parish Centre on Sunday 26th January.

The Burley-Tereli Friendship Trust raises funds for vital healthcare, educational and environmental projects in Mali, West Africa. The charity was registered in 2006 when funds were needed to build a secondary school. However since then residents in Burley have taken part in fundraising activities to help support such projects as:

- Maternity services and facilities

- Wells providing clean drinking water

- Building and equipping a secondary school

- Emergency famine relief in times of drought

- Building and equipping a new Dispensary

- Environmental projects to measure and prevent soil erosion, planting trees, planting grasses to hold back encroaching desert

- Supporting a fully qualified medical doctor who is now working in the capital Bamako

On display will be artefacts from the library - all of which are gifts from Téréli
