Burley and Téréli (a remote village in Mali, West Africa) have a remarkable link which evolved into the charity Burley-Téréli Friendship Trust and joyfully celebrated its anniversary in January. 20 years of achievements include 29 wells dug, a secondary school and safe maternity room built, and support for a key contact to become a medical doctor. Dr Zakari Saye is now a surgical oncologist in the capital, Bamako. His meeting with BCC in 2001 sealed a Friendship Agreement that will be commemorated, on August 9th, by flying the Malian flag in Burley. Read More...

The Trust is a village charity whose purpose is to maintain and improve our village for residents and visitors. We are funded by members, partnership work and fundraising. In spite of the recent restrictions we have been involved with several activities in Burley. These include supporting the Love Burley community action response to the pandemic, provision of the hanging baskets and tubs, repainting the pavilion at Scalebor, refurbishing the Fountain of Life area and coordinating the work on the Roundhouse garden. While we have begun to start opening up some of our buildings, Queens Hall currently remains closed. Government restrictions mean most events for 2020 have been cancelled and regular community sessions postponed. Behind the scenes we have been working hard getting everything ready to make the Hall Covid safe once we are able to start welcoming back our weekly groups. Looking further into the future, the wedding functions that have had to be cancelled this year have all rebooked for 2021 and our diary is open for enquiries for receptions and large weekend functions with most of the summer season available. Love Burley started in 2016 with the objective of providing a full Christmas dinner for senior members of the village living on their own, who might otherwise not receive a Christmas dinner. The first event that was held attracted 16 people, and was supported by a small group of volunteers and the local churches. The new tables and chairs, book browsers and seating were provided thanks to legacies and donations from Burley Community Trust, Burley Educational Trust, Ilkley Round Table, Dale Eddison and Burley Nursery School.
