What is DofE? (The Duke of Edinburgh)

It’s a life changing experience, a fun time with friends and an opportunity to discover new interests and talents.

It’s a tool to develop essential life skills. A recognised achievement respected by employers.

There are four sections to complete at Bronze and Silver level and five at Gold.

Age for starting:

Bronze 14 years old or 13 years and in year 9.
Silver 15 years
Gold 16 years

Any young person can do DofE regardless of ability, gender, background, or location. Achieving the award is not a competition and you have until your 25th birthday to complete. It's about setting personal challenges and pushing boundaries. Through the DofE programme young people make new friends, improve their self-esteem, and build confidence. They gain essential skills and attributes for work and life such as resilience, problem-solving, team working, communication and drive. This enhances CVs and University applications along with job applications.

We have a team of staff with a wealth of qualifications, experience, and knowledge.

Lindsay Field – Manager
Russell Robinson – Senior leader
John Popple – Leader
Jonny Gaunt – Leader
Julie Vaugh - Leader

Dave Pearson – Verifier

We also have a team of experienced expedition volunteers and assessors.

All staff are DBS checked, first aid and safeguarding trained.

How the Burley Parish Council scheme works:

The Parish Council are the licence holder for the charity.

We charge for expeditions and weekly sessions in order to cover the costs of staffing, insurance and kit.

We hold sponsored events during the year to help with building the DofE with new kit and up to date maps. Sponsored events are vital for the DofE to continue and grow.

We run weekly sessions on a fortnightly cycle for bronze and silver/gold £2 per session. These sessions are training sessions for expeditions and team building.

We use Lower Wharfedale, Upper Wharfedale, North Yorkshire, Yorkshire Dales and North Wales for our expeditions.

We hold an open evening once a year, normally around September, for new young people to enrol and an award presentation evening during December.
